Dozens attend a fundraiser for Derry teen who died in New Jersey accident
HOOKSETT - A community came together to celebrate the life of a loved one and also help support his family.
"We have a band and we have a lot of games and a lot of fun. We just want to be with our friends," said Jennifer Wheeler.
Loud music could be heard Saturday at the Deerhead Sportsman club as friends and family gathered for a fundraiser for the family of 17-year-old Jesse Philbin. Philbin died in a car accident in mid-April while coming back from Disney World with his older brother Justin Prouxl and two nephews.
"He saved my 4-year-old who went through the window," said Prouxl, who was driving the car.
The family is still grieving the loss of Philbin but remembered the good times they shared with him.
"He was a special kid, and it's cliche, but really he was a good kid that you wanted to spend time with and I am so happy I was able to spend time with him as a kid," said Erica Chakmakas, who is Philbin's cousin.
"He was always happy. It was like he always had something to be happy about, which was great about him. It was a great trait he had," said Mark Blondeau, who worked with Philbin at Juliano's Italina Pizzeria in Derry.
Along with saving his nephew's life, Philbin also helped to save several other lives.
"He saved eight people with being an organ donor," said Prouxl.
Prouxl survived the accident, but was badly hurt. More than $3,000 has been raised from local donors for his medical bills.
