Downtown laments loss as Aubuchon’s packs up stock

NASHUA – Some called the news shocking. Others were quick to blame the “mall effect,” or what some called the “Walmartization” of America. But you’d have been hard pressed on Monday to find anyone in Greater Nashua who didn’t admit to at least some degree of sadness upon hearing of the abrupt closure of downtown Nashua staple Aubuchon Hardware. “So, so sad,” wrote Telegraph online reader Laura Denehy. “A sad day indeed,” added Sue Smilikis. “Another store from my childhood gone,” Mark Loulakis lamented. The three are among hundreds, probably thousands, of Aubuchon shoppers trying to come to terms with the unexpected loss of a downtown icon that not only survived in the same spot for 78 years but thrived with competitive pricing and a rapidly-disappearing element in the retail arena: Knowledgeable, and thorough, personal service. “Aubuchon has been the local grocery store you go to every single day,” said Sy Mahfuz, another downtown icon whose family has operated Persian Rug on Main Street for decades.
