Dover will manually recount Question 1 after petition was filed

DOVER - Peter Schmidt filed for a recount petition for Question 1, which would restore ward-based voting in school board races.

On Monday afternoon Peter Schmidt, a former city councilor and Democratic state representative, filed this petition after the proposed charter amendment passed by six votes out of 3,800 ballots cast, according to Fosters Daily Democrat.

Catherine Cheney, who proposed the charter amendment process does not think that a recount will change the outcome.

City clerks expect that the recount will take place in the Dover City Hall auditorium this Monday morning. Each ballet, in regards to Question 1, will be manually counted with observers from both sides of the debate present to oversee the tally.

Ten signatures were required for Schmidt's recount petition and 16 people signed it, two of which have recently elected to the school board.

"When it's this close," Schmidt said to Foster's Daily Democrat, "you simply have to do it."
