Dover officer who dozed and crashed cruiser will be monitored

DOVER — An officer who fell asleep at the wheel and crashed a cruiser into a telephone pole will receive extra monitoring by supervisors while working the midnight shift.

According to, Police Chief Anthony Colarusso said Officer Ben Lilyestrom was not injured in the accident on July 27 and will not be disciplined in a punitive way.

“The best we could determine was that the officer dozed off while he was traveling south on Central Ave.,” he said.

An investigation into the accident determined the car was going only 17 mph at the time of the crash, and Lilystrom was not using either his cell phone or the mobile data terminal in the car at the time.

Lilyestrom, a 10-year veteran of the police force, will be monitored in the future, and the department is also looking at his diet, exercise and rest habits to ensure a similar accident doesn't happen again.
