Dover drug overdoses reach 33 for 2015 after two cases last week

DOVER — Two incidents last week bring the number of suspected heroin or fentanyl overdoses in the city to 33, including five fatalities for the year - and the year is only half over.

Nineteen-year-old Ryan Meinhert died Monday in a manner "consistent with" a heroin or fentanyl drug overdose, police told Fosters Daily Democrat. Police said the cause of death has yet to be confirmed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The death was one of two overdose calls that morning. The second occurred in a McDonald's parking lot. Dover Fire and Rescue were able to revive a 25-year-old victim with Narcan, an opiate antidote. The man was transported to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital and is expected to recover.

Adding those two cases to the 2015 tally places the city within 12 overdoses of the total from 2014: 45 overdoses including six that were fatal that year.
