'Don't bother asking': House for sale comes with mysterious upstairs tenant
CAYCE, S.C. — A house listing in South Carolina is gaining attention because it tells potential buyers "don't bother asking" about the mysterious occupant living upstairs rent-free.
The Zillow listing says that the "upstairs apartment cannot be shown under any circumstances," while at the same time telling buyers they will be responsible for the month-to-month tenancy in the upstairs apartment.
According to the listing, the occupant of the upstairs apartment has never paid, but there is a lease in place. The listing then states, "Yes, it does not make sense, please don't bother asking."
Built in 1950, the single family home is a "Great 'diamond in the rough'," and the listing states that it was last sold in 1997. Pictures in the listing show strange stains on the hardwood floors and ceiling, a large hole in the ceiling of one room, plenty of trash and random objects and a strange sculpture in the back yard that appears to be a golden paperclip.
It has currently been listed on Zillow for 32 days priced at $130,000.
The house is being sold "as-is" with no repairs, clean-ups or warranties implied.
According to an older listing on hotpads.com, the upstairs apartment is occupied by a professional artist. However, some users on Reddit and Twitter have their own theories about who the mysterious tenant could be.
