Derry residents reporting numerous bear sightings, animal control urges caution

DERRY — A number of bear sightings have been reported to police in Derry the past few weeks.

Residents in the area near Overledge Drive and Datillo Road say they have seen a mother bear and two cubs around the neighborhood. There have also been reports of a lone bear in the southern part of town near Humphrey Park and Cemetery Road.

Derry Animal Control urges residents to use caution around bears and not to approach them. Typically, bears run from human encounters, but animal control says a mother's protective instincts may cause a bear to behave differently, especially when startled.

Recommendations

- Remove bird feeders

- Keep pet food inside

- Cover barbecue grills

Derry Animal Control can be reached at (603) 432-6143.
