Derry brush fires blamed on illegal campfires

DERRY — Illegal campfires are blamed two brush fires that took dozens of firefighters to extinguish on Wednesday, including one firefighter who had to be treated for heat exhaustion.

The first fire was reported in a difficult to reach area behind Symphony Lane in the late morning. The second brush fire was located near Ballard Pond reported around 2:30 p.m., fire officials said. In both cases, tanker trucks had to be brought into the remote areas to get water to the put out the flames.

A total of about three acres burned, with the first fire requiring about 25,000 gallons of water and foam and the second about 10,000 gallons, firefighters said.

A permit to kindle a fire is always required at this time of year, firefighters said, noting that wooded areas are dry right now and urgin residents to use caution with open flames.
