CONCORD – Democratic state Rep. Tom Sherman of Rye announced Wednesday that he’s running for the state Senate Seacoast district currently held by retiring GOP state Sen. Nancy Stiles.

Sherman, a doctor, told NH1 News that “I bring a provider’s and a patient’s perspective to my job” as a state lawmaker.

Earlier this month Stiles said that she “plans” to seek re-election. But the three-term state senator on Thursday announced that she would retire rather than run for re-election.

Portsmouth businessman and 2014 GOP congressional candidate Dan Innis will now run for the seat. Earlier this year Innis suddenly dropped his second bid for the Republican nomination in the 1st Congressional District.

Senate District 24 includes Seabrook, Hampton, Hampton Falls, North Hampton, Rye, New Caste, Greenland, Stratham, South Hampton, Kensington and Newton.

Sherman, who works part time at Exeter Hospital, is a member of the House Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs Committee. He also serves on the Joint Task Force dealing with the heroin and opioid crisis.

“I want to bring my expertise and skills that I have used effectively in the House over the Senate in order to insure the health and safety my constituents in District 24 and the state,” Sherman added.

Sherman also told NH1 News that his service on the Medicaid Expansion Commission was a “really transformative experience” for him as a state lawmaker. Sherman first announced his candidacy for the state Senate in an interview with the Portsmouth Herald.

Sherman and his family moved to New Hampshire in 2008. He’s currently in his second term as a state representative.

The GOP currently holds a 14-10 majority in the state Senate over the Democrats. But five of the seven state senators not running for re-election are Republicans.
