Deer unwise to celebrate end to archery season as guns loom

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — It's a day of mixed emotions for Maine's deer, as most of the archery hunting season is coming to a close, just in time for the firearms season to begin.

The archery season ends on Friday, except in a handful of designated areas around the state in which it continues until Dec. 10. Maine's "resident only" day for hunters who pursue deer with firearms takes place on Saturday.

The rest of the firearms season begins on Halloween and lasts until Nov. 26. State officials say the deer herd can withstand more hunting pressure this year because so many deer survived a mild winter. They have upped the number of hunting permits.

Maine gave out more than 45,000 "any deer" permits via lottery. That is 60 percent more than last year.
