David Ortiz officially announces retirement in YouTube video

BOSTON Mass. - It's official. Big Papi himself announced Wednesday in a YouTube video that he is retiring after the 2016 season.

David Ortiz, who turned 40 today, said his reason for making the announcement now is so next year he can focus on the season, the team and "bringing another championship back to Boston."

Ortiz said the decision came after a lot of thought and thanked his second family, the team and the fans for support.

To date, Ortiz has 503 career home runs, a record only surpassed by designated hitter, Frank Thomas.

Ortiz signed off by saying, see you at Spring Training.

Oh... and Happy Birthday, Big Papi! See you in February.
