Dartmouth faculty vote in favor of independent grad school

The Associated Press

HANOVER (AP) — Dartmouth College faculty has taken an advisory vote in favor of creating an independent graduate school.

The Valley News reports college President Phil Hanlon on Monday advocated forming a School of Graduate and Advanced Studies. Faculty members approved the measure.

Hanlon says the school would help advance Dartmouth's profile in research. Arts and Sciences Dean Michael Mastanduno says the move would correct a "historical anomaly" in the college's organization.

Monday's vote allows the school's individual faculties to vote on the measure and pass their view to the Board of Trustees through Hanlon. The trustees ultimately have the final say in approving the school.
