CHELMSFORD, Mass. — Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan believes authorities recovered the body of a missing 16-year-old girl in the Merrimack River.
The Chelmsford Police Department responded to a report of a disturbance on the river around 10:30 p.m. Sunday where they learned that two jet skis collided into each other. One jet ski had a young man and the 16-year-old girl on board, while the other jet ski was driven by Douglas Dematos, 32. The young man made it to safety, but the young girl went missing following the incident.
Authorities began a search of the river for the teen that night but suspended it around 3 a.m. until daybreak. On Monday morning, officials recovered a body.
Police arrested Dematos, who was taken to the hospital following the crash, and charged him with operating a watercraft under the influence of intoxicating liquor, negligent operation of a motor boat, operating a jet ski at night, operating an unregistered motor boat, operating at night without navigation lights and operating a jet ski too close to another vessel.
"It is hot. It's the summer. Yesterday was a beautiful day; people are enjoying themselves and sometimes things just extend too late into the evening and unfortunately result in these tragedies," said Ryan
The crash remains under investigation. Officials plan to reassess Dematos charges and the involvement of the other individuals.
