Cunningham, Meyers Taylor win openers at US trials

The Associated Press

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) Nick Cunningham and Elana Meyers Taylor drove their sleds to wins Saturday in the opening races of the U.S. bobsled national team selection trials.

Cunningham paired with Casey Wickline to finish two runs in 1 minute, 53.14 seconds, good enough to lead the men's field by more than a quarter-second.

Meyers Taylor teamed with Ajla Glavasevic to finish two trips down the Mount Van Hoevenberg track in 1:55.45, one-tenth of a second better than the times turned in by Jamie Greubel-Poser and Cherelle Garrett.

The trials will continue Nov. 7-8 in Park City, Utah, after which the national team for the coming season will be named. Meyers Taylor, Greubel-Poser and Steven Holcomb have pilot spots locked up already after winning medals at the Sochi Olympics.
