WOLFEBORO — Those looking to adopt the Great Danes rescued at a suspected New Hampshire puppy mill may have to wait up to a year to do so.

The Wolfeboro Police Department served search and seizure and arrest warrants for the Wolfeboro mansion property Friday after an initial investigation on May 8 revealed the massive dogs living in unsanitary conditions with limited access to food and water.

"I’ve never seen conditions this bad in more than 21 years of law enforcement. Words cannot describe the absolute abhorrent conditions these animals were living in," said Chief Dean Rondeau of the Wolfeboro Police Department.

Police arrested Christina Fay, 60, on two misdemeanor charges of animal neglect following the seizure of the Great Danes. More charges are expected, police said.

The rescued dogs are considered evidence in a criminal case against Fay, so The Humane Society of the United States is caring for them at a temporary emergency animal shelter until the final disposition of the case is reached, said Lindsay Hamrick, New Hampshire state director for The HSUS. The location of the animal shelter has not been disclosed.

Once the case reaches its conclusion, The HSUS will bring updates about possible adoptions. However, this could take months or even more than a year to reach a resolution, Hamrick added.

The HSUS is unable to keep a waiting list for potential adopters but encourages those looking to adopt to stay updated through their newsletter. The organization has expressed their appreciation for the amount of NH1 News readers who have reached out looking to adopt these rescues.

Those looking to help animals rescued by The HSUS' Animal Rescue Team is asked to make a donation.
