MANCHESTER — A man was arrested Wednesday after stealing tools from a work truck and a cellphone from a store clerk, police said.
Police responded to Hans Food Mart around 6 a.m., where the clerk told officers that a man had entered the store with two bags of tools and asked the clerk if he wanted to buy any.
The clerk told police that he declined and then the man made a purchase. He said while he was looking away, he heard something hit the ground and thought the man might be trying to steal an item at the counter, so he asked him to leave.
The clerk realized after the man had left that his cellphone was missing, and police said the theft was caught on camera.
Police said later in the day, around 12:15 p.m., an officer working on construction detail saw a man fitting the suspect's description.
He was stopped and identified as David Vega, 32, of Manchester, and police said some of the tools in the bags had a business card attached to them.
Police contacted the owner, who reported that the tools had been stolen from his truck during the overnight or early morning hours Tuesday into Wednesday.
Police said Vega is currently out on probation and he was placed on a 72-hour hold by his probation officer.
Vega will be arraigned in Manchester district court to answer to the charge of felony theft by unauthorized taking.
