The future of health and hygiene has arrived to Catholic Medical Center in Manchester. Although it may look like something out of StarWars, the Tru-D SmartUVC, can wipe out infection-causing bacteria in seconds.
The 5-foot 5-inch robot uses ultraviolet technology to heat up a room and melt away harmful bacteria.
"This solution is 99.9 percent effective in eliminating viruses, bacteria," said Karen Kennett, Director of Infection Prevention.
But will this wave of the future eliminate the need for hospital staff? Will robots be the way to go when it comes to hospital jobs?
"After a traditional room cleaning, then we let the Tru-D do its job. It still needs to be operated by and hand held device outside the room, but it is very self-sufficient," said Kennett.
Staff members don't feel their jobs have been threatened.
"We still do the work. This just ensures that it is done right. I'd feel better if one of my family members was in this room after Tru-D cleaned it," said Don Garon, Catholic Medical Center Environmental Staff.
"This is now a part of our standard practices when sanitizing a room. It is no extra cost to patience when they look at their hospital bill," Kennett said.
