Contoocook candle maker creates Pope's official candle for US visit

CONTOOCOOK - Martin Marklin has been making candles for over 30 years at Marklin Candles in Contoocook.

But this year, Marklin recieved a special request all the way from the Vatican - to create a custom candle for the Pope.

The candle, to be lit by the Pontiff Friday at Ground Zero, has the Pope's crest in the middle of the candle.

"Here's a case where the Pope is going to go to a significant place where a tragedy happened. Pray for peace and forgiveness and light a candle for healing and to me to be able to make that candle is more than an honor," Markin said.

Marklin's Candles, one of just seven candle makers in the U.S. to create a candle for the Pope, has also made candles for masses for Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict the 16th.

It is no surprise why Marklin is chosen - his candles are made by hand with the finest wax.

The candle, which has a spare in case one is damaged, will be packaged and shipped to New York for Friday's ceremony at Ground Zero,

Marklin's Candles has made small replicas of the Pope's candle to celebrate his visit. You can look at all the candles on Marklin's website.
