Concord man honors fallen Navy SEAL with coast-to-coast bike ride
A Concord man is honoring a late Navy SEAL by biking from the West to the East Coast.
William "Blake" Marston was a 31-year-old Navy SEAL originally from Bedford, the Concord Monitor reported. Marston died on Jan. 10, 2015 after he suffered a seizure and fell unconscious seconds after making a training parachute jump in DeLand, Fla.
This was one of 50-year-old Mark Girardin's friends and someone he looked up to.
The last conversation that Girardin had with Marston back in Nov. 2014 was about Marston's bucket-list goal of riding his bicycle almost 3,000 miles coast-to-coast. Following Marston's passing, Girardin felt that this was the way he could honor him.
Starting on Sept. 27 Girardin set out to complete this ride - starting it at Coronado Beach, Calif., where Marston completed his SEAL training.
So far he's crossed about half the country and hopes to finish on Oct. 25 at Virginia Beach, Va. where Marston was last stationed.
Along the way, Girardin is raising money for Marston's favorite charity, The 31Heroes Project.
