Resident Lawrence Jefferson said he was driving by when he saw the fire at 20-22 Broadway just after 9 a.m. Tuesday. He helped one person down from the roof then went around back and alerted another resident who was carrying his son to safety.

Some have called Jefferson a hero.

"Heroes are people that do it every day," Jefferson said. "I'm just an every day guy."

There were no injuries in the fire and the cause remains under investigation.
