Community hoping Justin Bieber reconsiders to make dying Rochester girl's wish come true
ROCHESTER - A dying 9-year-old girl has two wishes - one is to swim with dolphins and the other is to meet pop star Justin Bieber.
One of Karlee Drew's wishes cannot come true because she cannot get into the water with the PICC line that helps with her treatments every other day. Her family said they were told her second wish won't come true because the Justin Bieber is "not doing wishes."
Make-A-Wish said that wasn't the case, but that Bieber was originally scheduled for a Wish in Boston, and wasn't planning to add another one.
Luckily however, Justin changed his mind and Kaylee was off to see him at his concert Wednesday night.
The hashtag #KarleesHomeTeam is now gaining steam in hopes of convincing Bieber to pay a visit to Karlee while he performs in Boston this week.
"I am trying to get this everywhere I can think of to help make her wish come true," said family friend Melena Lugo.
According to Lugo, Karlee was 7 when she was diagnosed with Myelofibrosis and MDS (Myelodysplastic Syndrome). Myelofibrosis is a serious bone marrow disorder that disrupts the body’s production of blood cells. She underwent chemotherapy and had her first bone marrow transplant in February 2015 and was in remission. But in late 2015, Karlee started feel sick again and it was determined she had a relapse and her condition was worse. The disease developed into Acute Myeloid Leukemia. It mean more chemo and a second bone marrow transplant in 2016.
Karlee is now fighting Graft Versus Host Disease (GVHD) of the liver, skin, mouth, eyes and quite possibly the stomach. This was caused by a reaction to the latest bone marrow transplant.
She was released from Children's Hospital on Friday and now gets the transfusions every other day, Lugo said.
