GILFORD - Dave Emerson declares the "Ice Out" each year on Lake Winnipesaukee.
Ice Out happens when the M.S. Mount Washington can successfully dock at each of the its five ports: Meredith, Weirs, Center Harbor, Alton Bay and Wolfeboro Bay. It marks the unofficial start to the tourism season at the lake.
Emerson let NH1 News tag along Thursday with Emerson Aviation to see if New Hampshire's largest lake was clear of ice.
"The holdout is Wolfeboro Bay, right now," Emerson said.
Ice Out usually occurs the third week in April, according to Emerson. His family has called it for the last 35 years but he says the record goes back to 1888.
The earliest ice out was March 23, 2012, and the latest was May 12, 1888.
Last year's Ice Out was April 23 and although Emerson said he didn't expect a repeat day of last year, it will happen before the weekend's over.
