Coast Guard searching for missing boater off New England coast
SALISBURY, Mass. — Coast Guard crews continue to search for a missing boater whose boat capsized off Salisbury Beach Tuesday night.
The Coast Guard, along with area law enforcement, initially responded to a report of two people in the water after their boat had capsized in rough water at about 5:40 p.m.
One person was rescued from a nearby jetty uninjured and transported to a local hospital.
When the Coast Guard’s 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew arrived on scene to locate the second person, they reported seeing him face down and unconscious in the surf zone. While attempting to rescue him from the surf, the boat was struck by an 8 to 10-foot breaking wave, and when the crew recovered from the impact, the man was nowhere in sight.
Neither person was wearing a lifejacket at the time of the incident, and the Coast Guard plans to continue searching Wednesday.
