Clash of the Cupcakes raises money for Southern NH Services

MANCHESTER - Local bakers faced off on Friday night for the fourth annual Clash of the Cupcakes.

The competition helped raise money for Southern New Hampshire Services Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.

"My predecessor actually thought of the idea, and she was watching the Cupcake Wars on TV, and she's like, what a great way to raise some money and taste some cupcakes. So that's how it all began," said Jen Sanders of Southern NH Services.

The event held at the Derryfield Country Club featured seven professional bakers bringing their best offerings to the table. A s'more cupcake, a carrot cake cupcake -- even a gluten-free cupcake with mascarpone-whipped frosting -- were among the offerings. The bakers brought their supplies and assembled the finished cupcakes at the event for all to sample.

Cupcake of the year went to Benson's Bakery and Cafe of Hudson for their honey bourbon chocolate cake with butterscotch ganache filling and caramel bourbon buttercream.

Money from the event will benefit programs that match seniors with opportunities in the community, like volunteering for nonprofits. "We also have some signature programs - we do strength-based program - where our volunteers are the leaders for those," Sanders said.
