CLAREMONT -A tree killed a man after lightning struck it and it collapsed on a car.
Kyle Leclair, 24 of Claremont, was pronounced dead on the scene.
Down trees proved a scary and deadly obstacle for drivers during the weekend even after the skies cleared.
Fawn French was driving on Chestnut Road during the treacherous conditions.
It was "horrible and scary, and I’m still shaken up by it," French said.
Police told NH1 News that Leclair was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Jennifer Hector witnessed the accident.
“I saw it happen and I just knew there was just nothing we could do to help him," Hector said. "It was just too late."
A young neighbor, Tobyn Vonkhale, also watched the whole thing happen from his living room window.
He had an adult call 9-1-1.
But no one in the home got hurt.
“The only person that got hurt was the person in the car that got killed," Tobyn said, describing how close the tree came to crushing his home. "If the tree was any bigger it would have gone through my sister’s room."
Since the accident, power and telephone poles have been restored.
All that is left is the remnants of down tree.
But the memory of what these neighbors saw haunts them as they grieve for a young man they didn’t even know.
“I couldn’t stop thinking about their family," Hector said. "I thought if it were my son - you want to be there, but there is nothing you can do. I just, I just feel so bad for their family."
