Chocolate officially banned in NH as bear bait for 2015 season

CONCORD – The N.H. Fish and Game Department has banned the use of chocolate as bear bait for the 2015 season.

According to the Union Leader, solid chocolate or candy containing chocolate cannot be used to lure the animals.

This comes after four black bears died from being poisoned from chocolate during last year's season.

Next year, the N.H. Fish and Game Department is planning to ban donuts, pastries and other baked good with chocolate or cocoa in them.

White chocolate can still be used as bait as it does not contain theobromine, which can sometimes be toxic to bears and other animals.

The bear hunting season begins Sept. 1.
