Chase ends in fiery crash, 2 injuries, 3 damaged vehicles
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) — Two people were injured and three vehicles including a state police cruiser were damaged when a high-speed chase ended in a fiery crash at a highway construction site.
State police say the pursuit started on Interstate 91 in West Springfield at about 2:40 a.m. Wednesday when troopers spotted a car driven by a man wanted by police.
The pursuit continued to Northampton, where police deployed tire deflation devices and the car crashed into a construction sign and a contractor's truck.
The car caught fire, a construction worker was injured, and the sign the suspect struck went airborne and landed on the cruiser's windshield.
The driver, Darryl Whitaker, of Chicopee, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The construction worker suffered minor injuries. The trooper in the damaged cruiser was unhurt.
