Changing Families: Fasting for a longer life


CHANGING FAMILIES - Want to live longer? A study says occasional fasting may be the way to do that.

A team of researchers at the University of Southern California is reducing the calorie count with specific foods to trick the human body into thinking it's fasting -- mimicking the effects of fasting.

In the study people consumed a very specific diet of about 1000 calories on day one, and 725 calories for the following four days. They did this once a month for three months.

Participants lost weight and reduced risk factors for cardiovascular disease and increased certain stem cells in the body. Researchers say the diet is turns on the body's ability to renew itself.
