Center named for fallen Manchester officer to re-open with renovations

MANCHESTER - A community center honoring a city police officer who died in the line of duty is re-opening after a major renovation project.

The Michael Briggs Community Center in Manchester provides free after-school activities for youth, including academic programs and sports. Building on Hope, a New Hampshire non-profit spearheaded the renovation project.

A ceremony is being held Sunday to show off the renovations. Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte and Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan both plan to attend.

Michael Briggs was killed in the line of duty in 2006. The re-opening of the center comes roughly a week after two Manchester police officers were shot while pursuing a suspect. Both are recovering.
