Casey Kasem's widow suing for medical records

The Associated Press

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) The widow of radio legend Casey Kasem is suing a hospital in Washington state for the medical records from the last weeks of his life.

Jean Kasem's lawsuit filed earlier this month in Pierce County Superior Court seeks his entire medical record, The News Tribune reported (http://bit.ly/1vbUdnc ) Tuesday. That includes his medical charts, laboratory results, billing records, notes, medications prescribed and the log of people who visited him.

The longtime host of the "American Top 40" died June 15 at St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor at the age of 82.

Jean Kasem had moved him to a friend's home in Washington state from California in a battle over his care with three adult children from a previous marriage. His daughter Kerri Kasem had won control of her father's care and had him taken to the hospital.

"When Casey entered the hospital, there was no expectation he had only a couple of weeks of life left to live," said Jean Kasem's attorney Lance Hester. "His daughter was controlling the decisions at the time, and when he perished, his wife, Jeannie, was never given any sort of explanation. She loved him, is entitled to the records by law and should not be denied the records."

Privacy laws forbid her from talking about a specific patient, said Mary Getchell, director of strategic communications for CHI Franciscan Health, St. Anthony's parent system. But the hospital is generally required to turn over records to someone authorized to have them, which could include a family member. Someone seeking such records would need to prove he or she is authorized to receive them, she said.

A court hearing is scheduled for April.

A spokesman for Kerri Kasem, Danny Deraney, said Wednesday he would try to get comment about the lawsuit.

"My guess is probably no comment because nothing she's doing would surprise anyone," Deraney said.

The battle between Jean and Kerri Kasem continued after Casey Kasem's death. Jean had his body moved in July from a Tacoma funeral home to Oslo, Norway, for burial.

Other relatives and friends say Casey Kasem had wished to be buried at the Forest Lawn cemetery in Los Angeles.
