Canterbury Police Chief John Laroche charged with aggravated sexual assault of then-teenage girl

CANTERBURY – The Canterbury police chief was arrested Tuesday and charged with one count of aggravated felonious sexual assault.

44-year-old John Laroche is accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl between January 1999 and August 2000.

According to the Assistant Attorney General, Laroche was a Boscawen police officer at the time of the assault and used his position to coerce the young girl.

“The town learned of this this afternoon. We were notified by the Attorney General’s office," Canterbury Town Administrator Ken Folsom said in a statement. "The board of selectman will hold a special meeting at 4 p.m. tomorrow to discuss the matter. The meeting will be non-public because it is concerning a personnel issue.”

Laroche will be arraigned in court Wednesday morning.

He is being held on $5,000 bail.
