Candia man arrested in Salem after trying to knock down statue of St. Mary

SALEM - A man armed with three knives was arrested after trying to knock down a statue of St. Mary at St Joseph's Church before running from officers on foot.

Stephen Blaine, 26, of Candia, was arrested Friday and charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and unlawful activities. Police responded after several callers made reports of a man attempting to knock down the statue in front of the Main Street church and walking down the middle of road talking to himself. When approached by police, he said he had a knife and then ran. As he ran, he threw several knives from his front pocket, police said. Three were located.

Blaine was released on $1,000 bail until his arraignment July 18.
