Budget stalemate puts Hassan's Senate decision on hold
CONCORD — With state budget negotiations stalled, so too is Gov. Maggie Hassan's timeline for announcing whether she'll run for U.S. Senate against Republican Kelly Ayotte.
The governor is the first domino in a line of Democrats who may seek higher office, leaving others in a holding pattern until she decides. Hassan is widely considered the Democrats' strongest challenger for Ayotte and national Democrats want her to run.
Most political observers expected a decision from Hassan after budget negotiations wrapped up in June. Now that she's vetoed the spending plan, she and her team say crafting a new budget remains her top priority.
Many Democrats say they truly don't believe she's made up her mind about whether to run for Senate or a third term as governor.
