Bomb squad called, Portsmouth federal building exacuated after discovery of 'suspicious' backpack

PORTSMOUTH - The Thomas J. McIntyre Federal Building in downtown was evacuated on Monday morning after a 'suspicious' backpack was found.

Authorities responded from Portsmouth Police and the N.H. State Police bomb squad just before 8 a.m. to investigate, closing off access to the building and moving all employees outside.

The dark-colored backpack was found in a trash can along a wall at the local post office, which is located inside the federal building, according to NH State Police Bomb Squad Commander Sgt. Jeffrey Dade.

"That was reported as being suspicious," Dade told NH1 News.

Responding bomb technicians took x-rays of the backpack and determined it wasn't a threat, Dade said.

The Federal Protective Service, who provides security for the federal building, has launched an investigation.
