A major dog food company is voluntarily recalling one type of wet food due to potential health risks.
Blue Buffalo Company recalled Blue Wilderness Rocky Mountain Recipe Red Meat Dinner Wet Food for Adult Dogs because the product has the potential to contain elevated levels of naturally-occurring beef thyroid hormones.
Dogs who ingest high levels of beef thyroid hormones may exhibit symptoms such as increased thirst and urination, weight loss, increased heart rate and restlessness, U.S. Food & Drug Administration reported. These symptoms are said to go away on their own.
Prolonged consumption of this product may lead to more severe symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, and rapid or difficulty breathing. The FDA recommends buyers to bring their dogs to the veterinarian if this occurs.
The FDA received one report of a dog suffering from symptoms after eating the wet food.
Buyers are told to throw out the dog food or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
The recall includes 12.5 oz cans, with UPC number 840243101153 and a best by date of June 7, 2019.
