Bike rider killed in Rochester hit-and-run identified by police

ROCHESTER - Police have identified the bicycle rider who died in a hit and run accident early Thursday morning as Jeffrey Howarth, 51, of Rochester.

Police say they responded to the area of Route 11/Farmington Road and the on-ramp to Route 16 southbound for a report of a hit and run accident where it was reported a male on a bike had been hit by a motor vehicle.

Emergency personnel found the man deceased on the shoulder beside the guardrail, with his damaged bicycle not far from him. Pieces from the vehicle that struck him and left the scene were found scattered along the on-ramp.

Police asked for help in locating a mid 1990’s-2000’s dark green Dodge pickup truck with extensive front end damage. As a result of tips from the public, police were able to locate a green 1998 Dodge 1500 pickup which is believed to have struck Howarth. Police have impounded the vehicle as part of the investigation which remains active.

Anyone has any information pertaining to this case is asked to contact the Rochester Police Department at 330-7127. Alternatively, calls can be made to the Rochester Crimeline at 335-6500.
