Biden, Holder honor firefighters, police with Medal of Valor

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Vice President Joe Biden says police and firefighters react instinctively without hesitation in emergencies to put other people's lives above theirs.

Biden is presenting the Medal of Valor to 22 police officers and firefighters in a ceremony at the White House complex.

He says those being honored are "an amazing bunch of individuals.

This year's recipients include officers who responded to the shooting at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, and officers who helped catch a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing.

Biden says the saddest part of the day is honoring two officers killed in the line duty.

Attorney General Eric Holder says America owes a debt that must be repaid not just with words, but with actions. He says the Justice Department will fight for public safety officials.
