Berlin police arrest suspect in armed robbery of Berlin Mills Variety

BERLIN - Police have arrested a suspect in the armed robbery of the Berlin Mills Variety store last Saturday.

According to police, a man entered the store and brandished a pistol, pointing it at the store clerk and demanding money. The suspect was reprtedly wearing a white mask, hooded sweatshift and gloves and carried a gray plastic bag that he asked the clerk to fill with cash.

Based on information from the public and their own investigation, police identified Ryan Morton, 32, of 559 Hillsboro St. as a suspect and received a warrant to search his address.

Thursday morning, Berlin police, the Coos County Sheriff's Office, the Berlin Gorham Emergency Response Team and the state Division of Forests and Lands sent officers to the address shortly after 7:30 a.m.

Officers located Morton inside the home and he was taken into custody without incident.

Morton has been charged with armed robbery. Police say he refused bail and was taken to the Coos County jail.

A bail hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 4.
