Berlin inmate possessing make-shift knife receives additional 15 months behind bars

CONCORD — An inmate serving time at the New Hampshire federal prison in Berlin had an additional 15 months tacked on to his sentence for possessing a make-shift knife Tuesday.

Parrish Powell, 27, previously of Mount Vernon, New York, was serving a 3-year and one month sentence for an illegal firearm conviction he received in 2014. During what was called a routine search by a corrections officer, “a yellow plastic eating utensil, sharpened to a point at one end with black electrical tape wrapped around the other” was found in Powell’s boot.

As a result, Powell was charged with possessing a weapon while being an inmate in federal prison. He pleaded guilty to the charge on Feb. 29.
