Balsams gets permission to withdraw water for snowmaking

The Associated Press

DIXVILLE — Developers planning to restore a historic resort in the economically distressed North Country have received permission from the state to withdraw water from the Androscoggin River for snowmaking activities.

The Water Quality Certificate for the Balsams was granted by the Department of Environmental Services. It will allow the resort to transport the water about nine miles via underground pipe to Dixville for snowmaking between Oct. 15 and March 15.

The department said it does not believe the withdrawals will significantly impact operation of hydroelectric facilities on the river or permit limits for municipal wastewater treatment facilities in Berlin and Gorham.

Construction for the first phase of redevelopment, which includes a new hotel and conference center and expansion of the Wilderness Ski Area, is expected to take 12 to 18 months.
