Ayotte to discuss concerns over heroin exposure among infants

Laura Montenegro

MANCHESTER— Sen. Kelly Ayotte met with medical providers, first responders and other officials about New Hampshire's heroin and prescription drug crisis.

The Republican senator hosted a round table at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester Monday to discuss legislation she is co-sponsoring to address the growing number of infants being exposed to heroin and other drugs in the womb.

The bill introduced by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Democratic Sen. Robert Casey of Pennsylvania would direct the Health Department to develop a strategy to help infants diagnosed with newborn withdrawal.

Catholic Medical Center says of the 1200 babies born last year, approximately 84 were born with newborn withdrawal, up four percent from the year before.

Police Chief David Mara says New Hampshire needs to tackle the growing epidemic by enforcement, education and treatment .
