ATV malfunction leaves rider pinned under vehicle in Berlin

BERLIN - A Merrimack man is recovering after a mechanical failure left him pinned under his all-terrain vehicle in Jericho Mountain State Park on Monday night.

Fish and Game officials say Joseph Medeiros, 53, was riding with a group along Brook Road around 7:30 p.m. when the ATV's front left wheel and drive train fell apart. The vehicle then made an abrupt turn to the right and flipped over, pinning him underneath.

Those at the scene were able to get the ATV off him, conservation officers said. Berlin firefighters, rescue personnel and police responded to the scene but say Medeiros suffered only minor injuries thank to the fact he was wearing a helmet.

"Conservation officers would like to use this to incident to remind operators of the value of utilizing safety gear," a news release about the incident concludes.
