Arrests, injuries follow Keene rioters after weekend mayhem near pumpkin fest

KEENE - "I came up to party-and that's what we did," Joe Herrick told NH1 News.

It was party that added police . . . and pumpkins.

"It was insane. Just people everywhere - a bombfire over there. Just, people going nuts," said Mitchell Denoncourt, who lives on Blake street - where students threw bottles of beer at each other in a riot Saturday.

Students at Keene State College say it was like nothing they have ever seen.

"I saw a couple people get smashed in the head with bottles - they were bleeding and stuff," one student said.

Many at the nearby annual Keene Pumpkin Festival didn't even know what was going on until they saw a helicopter overhead-which ordered drunken and partying students to clear the streets and go home.

Tyler Bagdonas, who came up to visit friends for the weekend, said his car was flipped in a campus parking lot.

"My insurance doesn't cover me, so I don't know what I'm going to do - but I think that Pumpkin Fest could've been a lot more fun had people just not rioted and stayed calm - it just got really out of control for no reason," Bagdonas said.

Now Bagdonas is without a car - and has started a fundraising website to purchase a new one.

Meanwhile Jenny Wojenski, who rents to college students, said,"It was just bottles and cans flying - street signs."

Wojenski is a graduate of Keene State, and has lived in town for 30 years. She said it has never been this bad.

"If you want to have a party, fine - but to be destructive like that and think it's funny, is just total disrespect."
