Arrest made in death of 81-year-old New England woman

The Associated Press

NEEDHAM, Mass. (AP) — Authorities have made an arrest in the killing of an 81-year-old woman found dead in her suburban Boston apartment in May.

Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey says the suspect in the death of Laura Shifrina is expected to be arraigned Friday. Authorities did not release the suspect's name.

Shifrina was found by her daughter May 31 in her unit in the Needham public housing complex for elderly residents where she had lived for 15 years.

Morrissey said she suffered "sharp trauma" injuries and may have been dead several days.

Her car was also missing, but was found a day later in Boston.

Friends say Shifrina was a Jewish refugee from Russia, where she was a software engineer.

Police say it was the first homicide in Needham in about a decade.
