BOSCAWEN - People came out in droves Monday to the state's Veterans Cemetery to pay their respects to the fallen.
“We’re going to put some flowers in my grandpa's vase because we really miss him,” Nick Defossess told NH1 News, as the 6-year-old held flowers.
“We’re going to lay the flowers down and I’m just going to pray,” said sister Alina Defossess.
Among the most heart-shattering sights at the State Veteran’s cemetery was a widow grieving at the tombstone of her husband's final resting place.
“It killed me. I lost my best friend,” said Elizabeth McLaughlin, looking at husband Robert McLaughlin’s grave.
After seven years of marriage and 20 years in the service, Elizabeth and her daughter have discovered a new meaning to the holiday.
“It's hard. You have to keep breathing," McLaughlin said. "Breathe deeply. That's what I tell myself now, breathe deep.”
The pains of her wound are still fresh, losing her husband just 10 weeks ago. He now rests along with so many others whom are remembered this Memorial Day.
“It’s just we're out here remembering him and to show support for other families, too, and show that it is all one giant family,” said Ivy Howard, remembering her stepfather.
