Alvirne can’t stop Pinkerton’s running game

DERRY – The new era for the Alvirne High School football team commenced on Friday, but Pinkerton Academy showed the Broncos they had some wrinkles to iron out. Alvirne went down against the highly-regarded Astros, 63-20, in Division I action. Special teams were troublesome for Alvirne to start. Pinkerton’s Nick Coombs returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for the game’s first points. After the Broncos went three-and-out on their initial possession, Coombs returned the punt to the Alvirne 27-yard line, where TJ Urbanik scampered to paydirt on the ensuing snap. Pinkerton controlled the line of scrimmage and time of possession, orchestrating three scoring drives from no worse than its own 43-yard line. The Astros were successful on their first five possessions and shot out to a 35-0 lead in a little more than a quarter.
