'All Hands on Deck' hearing on opioid epidemic held in Manchester

MANCHESTER- Holding back tears during a hearing on the opioid epidemic, Doug Griffin holds up a needle he found in his home.

“As you can imagine nothing could be worse,” Griffin said.

Things did get worse for his family. After years of trying to get help and being denied coverage for treatment because, according to their insurance company, “it wasn’t a life or death situation,” they lost their daughter Courtney to a fentanyl overdose last year.

Now his most prized possession is a letter Courtney wrote him saying “Thank you for always being on my side and loving me through all I’ve done. You’re my superhero.”

Griffin isn’t sure when his 20 year old daughter wrote the letter. He found it after she died.

Stories like this are becoming all too frequent as heroin and fentanyl continue to claim lives; 52 in Manchester so far this year.

Healthcare workers, families, and police all saying there aren’t enough resources or support.

“I have cried at funerals for those who couldn’t stop my tears have flowed freely for over 20 years,” said Heidi Moran, Clinical Administrator for Southeastern New Hampshire Services.

Touring a neighborhood where three drug houses where shut down last week, national “Drug Czar” Michael Botticelli, along with Homeland Security and the DEA got a firsthand look at the problem here.

Police Chief Nick Willard is interested in implanting a strike force program currently seeing positive results in Chicago; an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force.

Meantime, families like Courtney Griffin’s continue to try and find the support they need.

“This weekend, her boyfriend died in the same house in the same bed and was buried this week,” Griffin said.

The Griffin’s are opening the Courtney Griffin Sober House.

Senators Ayotte and Shaheen say they’re taking all of Monday’s testimony to Washington to secure federal measures to combat this crisis.
