After Tuesday's snowstorm, dome roof at popular NH indoor sports venue collapses

MILFORD — The roof of the Hampshire Dome has collapsed.

Fire crews were on scene at 34 Emerson Road. The dome is part of the Hampshire Hills Athletic Club sports complex.

No one was inside of the building when the roof collapsed, the fire department said. Officials and workers have confirmed there were no injuries.

"The weight of the snow caused a rip on the side of the building along a concrete wall about 30 feet long," Dan Catharine, a Hampshire Hills worker said. "The pressure was very high."

Catharine and Thomas Ieis, who both work at the sports complex, said they were working on clearing snow around the dome when it collapsed.

According to a post on Twitter, the club had also planned to clean the roof Wednesday. For this reason, the Dome was closed at the time of the collapse, shortly after noon.

The collapse "made quite a roar," Tom Sapienza, director of operations for the Dome, told reporters. "You could definitely here it coming."

Sapienza said workers attempted to patch up the collapse, but quickly evacuated the building when they realized they were unable to.

Milford received 14 inches of wet, heavy snow during the blizzard spanning from Tuesday into Wednesday.

In a recent statement, Hampshire Hills Athletic Club announced the dome will be closed for now and that a reopening date will be released as soon as damage assessments are completed.

All other operations will continue to take place at the other Hampshire Hills facilities. This includes some activities that were originally held inside the dome.

Just over a year ago the Hampshire Hills complex was the site of a very large rally for then presidential candidate Donald Trump. Just days before the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire primary, Trump was endorsed at the event by former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown.
