After texts with mom, NH Fish and Game rescue lost hikers

N.H. Fish and Game and Appalacian Mountain Club rescue personnel from the Lake of the Clouds in the White Mountains rescued two lost hikers at 5:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Johnathan Finley of Griswold, Conn., and Isabelle Motley of Woodstock, Conn., were hiking Mount Washington when they took a wrong turn.

They were trying to use a GPS and a photo a map to navigate the trails when they missed Boot Spur, a connecting trail. They wound up near Mount Isolation by way of the Davis Path. They lost phone reception, and Motley had hurt her lower left leg.

The hikers were able to text Motley's mother, who passed the information on to Fish and Game.

Fish and Game instructed the hikers to go back the way they had come through Motley's mother.

The rescue personnel met the two hikers and took them to the top of Mount Washington, after which they were bused down.

Fish and Game officials advise people to use traditional maps and compasses if they know how, and avoid electronics as their batteries can fail in the back country.
