After 110 years, iconic Rockingham Park racetrack closing in NH

SALEM (AP) — After 110 years in operation, a New Hampshire racetrack that's counted among the oldest in the country will close for good this week.

In its heyday, Rockingham Park was known as "Little Saratoga" and could draw crowds of nearly 10,000 people daily. Seabiscuit is among many of the famous horses that once galloped along the iconic Salem track.

But on Wednesday, the racetrack will close for the final time in preparation for its sale to a real estate developer. The property is slated to become the site of a mixed-use project that includes both residential and commercial space.

Rockingham Park stopped holding live races in 2009. In recent years it hosted simulcasts and took bets on off-track races.

The track's memorabilia, trophies and artwork with historical significance will be donated.
